Matthew 2:15

A short sermon in my series of New Testament sermons on Matthew 2:15:

(Mt. 2:15) "And he was there until the end of Herod, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, which says, Out of Egypt I called my Son."

Here Matthew refers to (Hosea 11:1) "When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son."

The prophet Hosea refers to Israel. Most likely, he did not know that God through him also speaks about the Messiah. It isn’t just spoken by a prophet, it is spoken by the Lord through a prophet. You see that authors of the Bible may not know about deeper meaning spoken through them.

Thus we know that the Bible has multiple senses, and often the question asked about what this text makes no sense, because there are multiple senses.

And most importantly, almost every modern theologian would call this quote out-of-context. But this is a quote in God’s word, it cannot be wrong. So, God likes out-of-context spiritual quotes from His word.
